Remembering Professor Michael Bliss

May 18, 2017 by Nicholas Terpstra

Dear Colleagues,

We are sad to share the news that our former colleague Professor Michael Bliss, OC FRSC, has passed away.  Michael first came to the Department as an undergraduate in 1958, and he earned his BA, MA, and PhD (under the supervision of Ramsay Cook) here before being appointed to the faculty in 1968. He was a member of our Department for 38 years, during which time he earned the rank of University Professor.  Over the course of his career, Michael published 14 award winning books on business, politics and medicine. He earned numerous honours over the years including being made an Officer of the Order of Canada.  His most recent honour came in 2016, when he was the first historian to be inducted into the Canadian Medical Hall of Fame.

Michael was also a leading public intellectual, who was often called on by the media to provide commentary on the political, business, medical and social life of Canada

Our thoughts are with his family. There are plans for a memorial, and we will share that with you at the appropriate time.

Best,

Nick
