April 2020 marks the launch of a new postage stamp commemorating the two most important Islamic festivals – Eid al-Fitr, which marks the end of the holy month of Ramadan on May 23, and Eid al-Adha on July 30, marking the end of the annual pilgrimage to Mecca. These events are the two most important festivals in the Islamic calendar and are celebrated by over one million Muslims in Canada.
Anver Emon, Professor & Canada Research Chair in Religion, Pluralism and the Rule of Law (Department of History, Faculty of Law) served as an advisor to Canada Post and the design team at Context Creative, to ensure the stamp reflected both traditional and contemporary Islamic art and architecture.
Merging the delicate and symmetrical geometric designs into the shape of a snowflake “speaks of the distinctly Canadian context,” says Emon – “We (all) the North.”
Canada Post features the new stamp in the most recent issue of Details magazine.
