Biography
Chaoran Ma is currently a Ph.D. candidate in history at U of T. Born and raised in China, Chaoran received her B.A. (2017) in History from Fudan University and her Mphil. (2019) in History from the Chinese University of Hong Kong. During her doctoral studies, she has been trained in three subfields, including Chinese history, European history, and the history of gender and sexuality. Her research interest lies primarily at the intersection of law, gender, and sexuality. Her Ph.D. dissertation, entitled "Sexualizing Justice: Sexuality and Legal Reforms in China, 1802-1949," will examine the construction and negotiation of sexual norms by multiple agents in the legislative and judicial fields. Her research will also pay particular attention to the representations of sexuality articulated by ordinary people, especially the lower classes. She is also interested in comparative studies of gender and sexuality between China and Europe.
