Description

This discussion-based workshop is focused on local legal transformations that occurred under the influence of imperial powers. Our discussions will not be confined to a single empire; we will venture into various imperial formations, including the Russian, Ottoman, and Western European empires, examining Islamic legal developments in the 18th and 19th centuries across regions such as the Middle East, North Africa, and South Asia. In the month of December, we will discuss State Law and Legal Positivism: The Global Rise of a New Paradigm (2022) by Baudouin Dupret and Jean-Louis Halperin, which is also a series of essays analyzing the shift from ancient to modern legal systems in different geographic locations. We’ll focus on the following sections of the book: Introduction, Chapters 1, 5, and Conclusion.
