Description
The University of Toronto invites you to the 2025 Priestley Memorial Lectures, delivered by Sanjay Subrahmanyam, Distinguished Professor and Irving and Jean Stone Endowed Chair in Social Sciences at UCLA.
This year’s lecture series, "Philology, Botany, and Religion: Euro-Asian Intellectual Encounters in the Seventeenth Century," explores how European powers—including the Dutch, English, French, and Iberians—engaged with Asia through language, botany, and religion. Topics include philology and collection practices, VOC cosmopolitanism, and the intellectual networks of figures such as Pietro della Valle and Isaac de Saint-Martin.
The Priestley Lectures are open to faculty, students, staff, and the public. Accessibility accommodations are available upon request. For more information, contact uc.outreach@utoronto.ca.
