Description

Gabrielle Hecht, Professor of History at Stanford University, explores the impacts of residual governance in South Africa’s mining industry, highlighting how communities, experts, and artists combat the environmental and social injustices stemming from waste governance. This concept, centered on gold and uranium mining, treats affected people and places as waste and accelerates global racial capitalism. Hecht’s research sheds light on the Anthropocene's progression and environmental justice.
